River East House League Hockey

2021-22 House League Year End Report

In the past couple of years, we started the season with a feeling of the unknown. This year was no different, but this time we managed to have a full season with no major interruptions. It was good to see the young, beginner skates again with the returning players from past years participating in the Development Camp. It was nice to see that this camp continued to run even in the middle of the toughest times during the pandemic. Again, thanks to Tim Juer and crew and of course a special thanks goes to Darren/lead instructor who seems to have a special bond with the players. It always amazes me how they manage to have beginner skaters skating by themselves without any support in one to two sessions.

Unfortunately, the number of participants were down a little because on the uncertainty of the times. There were 12 teams of U7 (6 years old and younger) and 9 teams of U9 (8 years and 7 years old). The teams manage to play all their games without any major hiccups. This of course is due to the efforts spent by the coaches and their staff. They had to adapt and be flexible to the situation put forth in front of them such as one or two teams (cross ice games) not being able to make their games because of Covid protocols.

Again, I can’t thank the coaches, their staff and parents for having to adhere to Covid protocols ensuring the hockey season survived. With all the restrictions we managed to bring back the FACE-OFF event for the U7 teams. From all the feedbacks - the players and parents enjoyed themselves, especially when tied in with the Halloween theme. I would like to give a special thanks to Nancy Plustwa who made over 120 gift bags as a give-away to each player.

Some development was also performed led by our own Development Director Nolan Shortridge, who provided some guidance to the coaches of the U9 teams.

Hopefully, next year will be a “normal” year and we’ll be able to administer more training for players and coaches with less restrictions.

Lastly, I would like to thank the current executive for all their work and dedication for the past two challenging years to ensure that we can have hockey again.

John Dela Cruz
Vice-President of House League
