River East House League Hockey

2018-19 House League Year End Report

As we slowly move into some warmer weather, we reflect the past House League season.

As always, each season is started with the Development Camp. This has been the flagship of our program for years. Year after year this camp has always met and surpassed the expectations of parents. It has been so successful that each year weve tried to expand it to the older age group. Tim Juer and his crew of young men and woman have a certain connection with the kids which have made them very teachable.

The Cross-Ice program for the 6 and Under program has been instituted for a few years now and Ive been receiving great reviews from parents, regarding the enjoyment and the amount of participation their child is having in these cross-ice games. It continues to be a good foundation for developing young hockey players and coaches.

As for the 7/8 program, the Half-ice structure was extended through the whole season for the first time this year. Of course as with any change, there was some resistance to the idea. The feedback from coaches at the end of the season were either neutral or it was a great idea to have it extended.

The Half-ice system is invaluable for the development of players, coaches and young referees alike. Regular half-ice rules were modified to better suit the House League level of teams at the beginning of the season. Although, development was always emphasized in these games, a more stringent monitoring of the 7/8 teams had to be made throughout the season regarding rule violations. As with any sport, certain coaches/teams tend to be more competitive and excitable during the course of these games than most. A reminder to a small number of teams to follow the rules and not stretch it. Well continue to educate coaches that development is key, not wins or losses, especially when standings are not recorded and there are no play-offs.

From the direction of the Development Committee there are plans to provide more education for coaches regarding the teaching of individual skills to their players. I hope coaches will embrace this and take advantage of future courses that will be offered to them. One emphasis, is educating coaches on goaltending.

At this time, I would like to thank the executive and community club reps for assisting me and providing support to our House League program.

Also, a big thank-you to those head coaches, their assistant coaching staff and team managers for giving their valuable time and energy to their respective teams.

I would like to give a special thank-you to Nancy Plustwa, Jernej Andelic and Sherri Quesnel whom have made my work a lot easier.

Remember, Development Camp starts the weekend after labour day long weekend.

Have a great summer everyone.
