River East House League Hockey

2017-18 House League Year End Report

The 2018 season for the House League program was characterized as the “Season of Change.”

As usual we started our 2018 season with the Development Camp, this time with a change in venue. We moved our program from Gateway to East St. Paul and River East Arena. There was a little bit of apprehension in the move from all involved. As it turned out, the move to East St. Paul Arena was more than suitable for the program. As per usual Tim Juer and his crew of instructors did an excellent job in teaching the young skaters. Again, can’t say enough good things about this program.

For the first time this season we started our Cross-Ice program for the 6 and Under age group. The program consisted of splitting the ice into 3 sections with a team on each section of the ice performing pre- programmed drills. This was followed, by games of 4 on 4 between the three teams, split into three skill levels. This was met with resistance from some parents. But, by seasons end everyone was onboard. It promoted more puck touches and involvement from every skill level.

We also introduced the Half-Ice program with 7 and 8 year old age group. The program consisted of splitting the ice surface to 2/3 ice with a 5 on 5 game and the remaining one third ice was dedicated to skill development. Again, this was met with some reservation at the beginning of the season. But, just like the 6 and Under, the program was appreciated by all involved according to the year end surveys. Younger officials also benefited and honed their skills with the Half-Ice program.

As with most introductory programs we will have to evaluate these programs and make some minor changes to continue to improve the development of our young athletes.

I would like to thank the many coaches and volunteers who put their precious time and an incredible amount of effort for the kids and parents of each team to make the game a fun and enjoyable one.

Also, I would like to thank the executive members and the community centre representatives for providing time in their busy schedules in continuing to promote and develop the game of hockey in our area.

A special thank-you goes to Nolan Shortridge who developed the 6 and Under program drills and worked tirelessly on the on-ice portion with the coaches.

I would also like to give a special thanks to Nancy Plustwa and her group of volunteers for providing us a venue and all the work they did to showcase both the Cross-Ice and Half-Ice programs. Nancy and Nolan received high praises from Hockey Manitoba for their great work with the pre-season Cross-Ice, Face-Off event at East St. Paul Arena. It was the best run event across the city and should be the template for all associations as told to me by a Hockey Manitoba representative.

Enjoy your summer everyone and we’ll see you soon.
