2021-2022 Season Report

The 2021-2022 season for the Northeast Predators AA program saw one team for each age group. The U13 and U15 were each coached by a parent coach as we were unable to find nonparent coaches for these groups. The U18 group had a nonparent coach who unfortunately fell sick part way through the season. The remainder of the season was coached by parent coaches.

I feel very strongly that while we appreciate the volunteer parent coaches, we need to do everything we can to have nonparent coaches at AA.

Roster sizes need to be reviewed – Hockey Winnipeg would not allow us to shorten the roster size stating we would be taking away an opportunity for someone to play at this level. The issue is our area doesn’t support the talent level needed to play AA and be competitive. Efforts being set out at the younger ages to build our athletes into more competitive players will help the situation going forward.

We were unable to hold tryouts for the U18 due to small numbers for registration. We have several U15 players moving into the U18 bracket next year so hopefully this will mean tryouts can be held and a competitive team chosen.

U13 and U18 both lost out in the 1st round of playoffs, U15 made it to the semi’s by sweeping the 3rd place team in their 1st round and taking the 1st place team to task with some close games, losing the series 3 games to 1.

We hosted a very successful year end banquet on April 19th. Teams were able to give out individual awards, we had a gift for each player and the U13 team was honored with medals from the Dream Factory for their fundraising efforts for one of their own – Rylyn Rewniak. We had Annie Chipman speak to the girls and what an amazing and relatable speech she gave – it was great! In the end a surplus of $721 can be used towards next year’s event. A huge thank you to Julie for all her help as she learned the ropes to take over next year.

Going forward I would suggest a review of the budget for the banquet and awards as pricing for these events is only going up.

There were issues this year with “who to complain to”. As we share the teams with LSMHA there is a rep from REMHA and one from LSMHA. The dynamic this year was such that the U15 team was hosted through LSMHA however the REMHA rep had a daughter on the team and the U13 team was hosted through REMHA with the LSMHA rep having a daughter on the team. As the REMHA rep I never heard one parent complaint from the U13 team only to find out there that there were several issues throughout the season. Complaints were brought to the LMSHA rep however as he had a daughter on the team, he should have been redirecting these to me to handle. This did not happen, and the team had a very divided parent group by the end of the season. I would suggest that like the Mauraders the Predators host “parent meetings” with the REMHA & LSMHA reps present just before the last cuts at each age group. At these meetings it can be made very clear the chain of command – parent liaison is the first point of contact, if that person feels the REMHA/LSMHA reps needs to get involved then they bring it forward. We can’t help fix things if we don’t know they are broken so explaining how things work will put the onus back on the parents to deal with things properly.

This is my last meeting – it’s been 10 years since I started this journey – starting as the Valley Gardens Community Club rep. I can honestly say that this REMHA board is the best group of volunteers I have had the pleasure of working with. Thank you to everyone and best of luck as you continue to help these kids play the sport we all love.

Thank you,
