Ice cost for city this past year was $202.50 per hour.  Garson was $173.25.  We have been notified by the city that their cost will be increasing to $205.15 per hour for 2017-18 season.

We received fewer hours from Garson this past season as they increased the number of tournaments they were hosting.  We have been informed by Garson that we remain an important part of their program and they will try to increase the number of hours for next season.

We continued with the practice of scheduling all of our games at Gateway and East St Paul this season, something we started last year.  Terry Sawchuk and River East were used as practice facilities only except for a handful of playoff games that were scheduled there in March.  This continues to work well for everyone involved.

There were some issues with the game schedules being released by Hockey Winnipeg this past season especially in the first half.  Changes were being made as late as October 20th to a schedule that was starting on October 22nd.  In addition, the end of the schedule was extended by one weekend in the second half due to ice shortages in some association arenas.  Many of the changes were a direct result of other association teams being added or deleted at the last moment.

In addition, Hockey Winnipeg changed their policy regarding AA games.  We were required to provide ice for the entire season as opposed to each half.

In my annual report last year, I indicated an area of concern was the number of exemptions teams are requesting.  Unfortunately this trend continued this season.  Exemption requests impact both the game and practice scheduling.  It appears some coaches and managers are unaware of the process involved.  Exemption requests, other than teams in the house league, must be done through Hockey Winnipeg.  If you are unsure of the process, contact your division director.

I would like to again remind everyone that games take precedence over practices.  Once the game schedule has been posted by Hockey Winnipeg, it is up to the area association to re-schedule games if the need arises.  After all of our games and practices have been scheduled, we have no spare ice time available.  If we need to re-schedule a game, we will have to take back a practice time.  Unfortunately, we cannot replace the practice time if this occurs.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the REMHA board members for their assistance and cooperation.  I would like to single out the following persons; Sherry Quesnel from Gateway who does a great job providing hours and setting up practice schedules for the A2/A3 and House League teams.   Cory Kulchycki who puts together the AA and A1 practice schedules.  Jim Leblanc, VP East League, for helping out with the East League game schedule.  John Delacruz VP House League for his assistance and input into house league and Nancy Plustwa from East St. Paul.

Enjoy your summer.
