2018-19 Presidents Year End Report

I would like to thank the REMHA Executive members, Community Centre representatives, coaches, managers, refs and timekeepers for their dedication & hard work this past season to deliver the hockey program. In particular I would single out individuals:

  • Breanne for handling the role of registrar and making a positive transition from our past registrar.
  • Sherri for helping out at tryouts and getting our year started on the right foot.
  • Chris Zajac and Bruno Hockey for running our tryouts.
  • Ryan Bonni and Bowen Barrett for running our skills sessions.

The Novice half ice Hockey was done this season for the full year and youth skill zone helpers were used. All reports indicate that it was a positive experience.

The 2019-2020 season will be one of change.

All Home teams will now where black and light jersey on the road.

The rule for temporary players will be the same as playoffs - the team roster must be below a set number of skaters before allowing to call up.

AA Hockey Changes:

Hockey Winnipeg will be eliminating the Minor Peewee and Minor Bantam categories.  Each area will still be expected to ice 2 equal teams unless a variance is granted to only ice 1 team.

A Hockey Changes:

Hockey Winnipeg will be eliminating the elimination of Minor Peewee category.

Why the changes? Many of the smaller associations are having trouble icing a team at each and every level. Hockey Winnipeg has decided to follow the Hockey Manitoba model of twinning ages.

All teams will be given one 30 second time out in the regular season. It cannot be used if the game clock has been cut.

Novice Changes:

There will be a jamboree at season's end; minimum 3 games - no playoffs.  Team Formation number will be 13 not 15 as done at the older ages.

REMHA Changes:

REMHA will also be doing a one year tryout test.  The process will change; each player will still get the guarantee of 2 skates.

After the first two sessions the independent evaluators will rank all players:

  • 25% of the top players will be placed in A1 and will no longer take part in the tryouts.
  • 25% of the entry level players will be placed in A3 and will no longer take place in tryouts.
  • 50 % of the players will have two more sessions to determine if they are A1 or A2.

We will continue to use independent on-ice staff and evaluators to run our tryouts . More info will be posted on our website over the summer.

Again, a big thank you to all our volunteers who make this a positive in our community.

Have a great summer!

Bruno Zarrillo
President REMHA
