River East Officials

2018-19 Referee-in-Chief Year End Report

This year proved to be a challenging one and a rewarding season for REMHA. The challenging part was trying to keep everyone involved in the program and supply all 85 officials with meaningful games to match their level of competition. This past season was a tremendous one for development, as River East was able to send 7 officials, 2 female and 5 males to Hockey Winnipeg’s VP-cup and to Hockey Manitoba’s Directors cup, where they get exposure to other elite officials and mentoring by senior Hockey Manitoba supervisors. In addition, one of our first-year female officials was invited to the Hockey Manitoba Female Top 40 camp, unprecedented for a first-year official. Congratulations to them all for a tremendous season and commitment to the program.

This year featured for the first time in the River East area a FMA1 game with a full female crew officiating. And then again in the play-offs two more games worked. Great achievement for development. I am very proud of the area’s accomplishments in our female program.

This past season River East hosted 5 divisions in the play-offs. The divisions chosen from FMAA to A3-Atom allowed me to use a vast majority of our officials through-out the entire play-offs. Great job by our President in his choice of hostings.

This year saw our female on-ice officials program grow from 3 in 2017-2018 to 6 in 2018-2019 and have 3 female timekeepers expressing interest in taking the level clinic for next season. I am most pleased with the growing and development of our female program and look forward to another great year in 2019-2020.

This year’s recipients of the Nick Slywka Memorial Awards presented by the Slywka family:

  • Most Promising Official – Nick Miller
  • Most Improved Official – Tesia Hrom
  • Most Deserving Official – Wendy Ursel

In closing, I would like to thank the entire board for their support and commitment and transparence through-out the year to the River East Hockey program and in making the officials development an ongoing priority.

Respectively,
John McDonald
Referee-in-Chief
